Fitblogging report #2

You know what I love about going to conferences? traveling, learning new things, meeting new people and catching some face time with friends---all these make for fabulous adventures on the road. You know what I don't love about conferences?
Being on the road shuts my exercise and eating right plans right out to hell. Yes, I know there are those of you who go to the gym when staying at the hotel, or for a run in the neighborhood before you get to those meetings and sessions. You order salad, pack your protein bars, stay away from junk food, drink your bottled water and laugh at our lazy fat butts. Fine, you get a gold star!
I must confess, I am just not cut out that way. I don't get any exercise when I am at a conference, unless you count walking through the expo hall and the mad dash to make the flight on time. I don't eat right when I am at a conference either. When I am home, it is easy to count portions, not have junk around the house and make sure we eat plenty of fruit and veggies. I also try and cook at home most of the time and the gym and pool is walking distance away. On the road, it's a whole new ball game.
I am back home after a few conferences in the past couple of months and trying to get back on track. I'll be reporting back from the field soon. Wish me luck!

Blog World Expo 2008 Nuggets

Robert Scoble to Rick Calvert, "Congratulations for not listening to me when I said Blogging Conferences are dead and doing this conference. This is a great event!"

Robert Scoble at Microjournalism session, "I have created other identities at Twitter, just so I can join in and experience how it is NOT to have any friends."

tehkenny: "Microjournalism: Journalism for Midgets."

Doc Searls at a party in response to being called a Branding expert: "I never let it escape me that the term came from the cattle industry."

Chris Carfi on chacha: "Best way to solve drunk arguments, you just call and ask your question at ChaCha."

The Wine Angel at Aureole wine bar at Mandalay Bay: "We have 2752 wines. What's your pleasure?" as he hands Robert a tablet PC that has the menu. "Can you search for wines by name?" Robert asks. "No, you have to scroll through." He responds. No wonder they have a tasting menu that takes two and half hours to enjoy.

My Generation

When my family and I immigrated to the states in the eighties, and I was having problems adjusting to the new culture because my parents' lifestyle was so different from those of my new found American friends, everyone said: That's understandable; you are part of the Second Generation immigrants.

When I graduated with honors  with my liberal arts degree from an IVY league school in the nighties and I struggled to find a job, everyone said: That's understandable; you are part of the Generation X.

Now that I am married with children and struggle to take care of my aging mom and my growing kids, everyone says: That's understandable; you are part of the Sandwhich Generation.

First I was a number, then I became a letter and now I am deli meat???

I forget...

My mom and I are preparing a meal while my husband is playing with our baby in the other room. "Robert is giving Milan a bath, I think." I tell my mom. "I can hear him happily splashing in the water." My mom nods in agreement. A few moments later, she turns to me and asks, "so where is the baby?"
"I just told you. His dad is giving him a bath. You didn't hear me?" I ask, raising my voice thinking she might have misheard me.
My mom shakes her head and sighs. "Oh yes, you are right. These days I forget everything." She motions towards the bottle of herbal pills sitting on the counter. "They say these are supposed to help with memory, so I bought them."
I look at the bottle of pills and ask as I am reading the cover, "So are you taking them? Do they help?"
She looks at me and shrugs while responding: "I am not sure. I forget."
I love my mom :)
