Some of my best friends are Jewish

I don’t consider myself a religious person; neither am I a political activist. I am writing this post because of all the controversy that the Iranian President’s anti-Semitic comments have brought up in the media recently. Simply put: he does not represent me. Neither do his views represent those of the majority of the Iranian people living inside or outside of Iran.

Growing up in Iran, I was never taught in school about the Holocaust. Instead, I remember reading many stories about the oppression of the Palestinians by the Israelis. We never got to see both sides of the story and many historical facts were never covered in our school books.

Since I have left Iran, I have learned a lot more about the Holocaust and the Palestinian and Israeli conflicts. I have also been lucky enough to meet and befriend some really cool Jewish people.

One of my cousins married a Jewish man a few years ago and their wedding was one of the most beautiful I have ever been to. They had taken the best parts of each tradition and created a celebration of their love and both of their faiths. Our world needs more of these interfaith celebrations and less racist sentiments. Hoping 2006 is a better year for all of us no matter what your faith is.

Unfortunately the media has a penchant for reporting and putting the microscope on the most negative aspects of our modern culture and political landscape, much to the detriment of those caught in the net. The Iranian presidents remarks were completely fantastic and to an extent, irrational, but as you say, they simply do not reflect the views of the majority of Iranians. At face value, they're irrational. After all, facts is facts, no matter how hard someone tries to deny them.

Your point is well taken -- it's one I have to reiterate every time Mr. Bush says or does something I view as being repugnant -- he does not speak my mind nor does he reflect it.

In the early days of the Internet, I worked in the CNN community (before it was completely dismantled by Steve Case and his ilk), and saw so much hyperbole and hatred from the various players in the Middle East-- it was sickening. It's unfortunate that the extremism isn't limited to one side or the other -- they're all equally guilty, which is why I'm afraid peace is a dream we'll chase forever.

The reality is that until the parties can agree to disagree and move from there, conflict will exist. However, it would be helpful for the press to move past remarks like those of the president of Iran and dismiss them out of hand without all the hoo-ha. It would also be good for those people who wouldn't appreciate being associated with those remarks.

Thanks Keyvan. I sure hope we don't get into another war. That's the last thing we need.

Our terrorist president is going to start new world war. Jewish people are great and most of us don't have any problem with them.
