Ten Ways To Write A Killer Blog

Robert and I have been preparing for our upcoming session at ConvergeSouth about tips and tricks on writing great blogs. Personally, I am of the opinion that the best way to blog is not to blog at all. It’s like what they say about keeping your computer safe from viruses: the best way to protect your computer is not to turn it on at all and the best way to blog is not to blog at all. Barring that good advice, and understanding that no blog post will be perfect, here are some tips that could help you blog and prosper. I have also included some additional reading at the end of this post for your reading pleasure.

    1)    Pick a defining title tag: What keywords do you want to be known and searched for? If your blog is about food, then the word food needs to be in your title tag: i.e. Maryam’s cravings: will blog for food.

    2)    Pay attention to your headlines: write snappy, sexy headlines filled with relevant keywords. i.e. Microsoft’s iPod killer: coming Zune to a Walmart near you

    3)    Add more Media: podcasting, videoblogging, and photography. Adding sound, photos, and video to your blog makes it more attractive and gives you more ways to communicate your message to the audience.

    4)    Write frequent and precise posts: Post often even if your posts are short. Think of your audience as a new love intrigue. Not every contact you make needs to be filled with meaningful, deep and romantic content. You need to show them you are interested though. Sometimes you call just to say hi, sometimes you show up with a bouquet of roses and sometimes you write them a poem that will put Lord Byron to shame. The point is you need to show up and you need to make the effort. You catch my drift.

    5)    Find your own niche: Get some scarcity and focus on a single niche. There are millions of blogs out there. What makes your blog worth reading? It might be the corky way you view the world and most importantly it is those interesting details that are interesting just to you. For example, check out this highly popular blog about the London Underground.

    6)    Give free link love: Network with other bloggers and influencers and link out to friends and enemies alike. To become an authority, you need to network and learn from others and you’ll earn credibility when you give credit when it’s due even if happens to be your competitor.

    7)    Get up-close and personal: Develop your own style and persona online and cover stories by adding your own perspective. Don’t be afraid to be controversial, agree to disagree, or just over the top from time to time.

    8)    Tag baby, tag: make your blog optimized for search engines by tagging your posts.

    9)    Admit mistakes and make amends.

    10)     Allow comments on your blog, make commenters feel welcome, provide a safe environment for your commenters in your blog and respond as often as possible.

    11)    ok one more bonus tip: write well. Read and reread, check your facts, spelling, grammar and your state of mind before you hit publish. Once you hit that publish button, your post is going to live on the Internet forever. Does it represent you in the best way possible?

Now, I am not an A-lister and I doubt I ever will be. What I have shared with you are not my own brilliant ideas. I have been hanging around some great bloggers for the past few years though and have been reading and continue to read many blog posts.  The above is just based on my observations, but by no means a complete list. Please do your own research and if you come upon words of wisdom please share it with the rest of us.

If you have the time and the resources, attending conferences and un-conferences, are always helpful. I learned quite a lot at the Blogher conference back in July, and look forward to the upcoming gatherings at ConvergeSouth and Blog Business Summit in October.

Additionally, I suggest reading Helen’s posts on how to pick the best blogware, and how to drive traffic to your blog, Shel’s nine random thoughts on blogging, and Dennis A. Mahoney's article: How to write a better weblog.

If I missed anything please feel free to comment and improve this post. Thanks for stopping by. Good luck and keep on bloggin’

This is a blog post from last year, but you can still apply these tips to your blog these days. They can't hurt.

Nice post. I would like to add the following points:

    1) Try using a keyword search tool like the tools included in Google AdWords. It will help you get a lock on the keywords that belong to your site. It is a good idea to write content using those keywords.

    2) Go over your archives and see if you have added knowledge to something you have posted about. If you have a few categories you write about, always try to go through them and come up with new content. You never know when some reader is only interested in one of your categories, so keep fresh content for them.

These are some very good tips, and I guess anything I'd have to add in comments has already been added--specifically what kr8tr here says about passion. Drink a little long tail kool aid and write about a niche--I guess you caught the niche part. The passion ties in with that. Fun.

    Maryamie,

You can't improve what you don't measure.  Though I see some great tips, I would add that you need to learn how to measure the success of those tips.  Here's a good primer I wrote.  I would like to expand beyond the platforms I've chosen, but that's going to take some time.

    McD,

    well said!

    Amit,

    I couldn't agree more. Thanks!

    John,

As always you have added to the post by your insightful and fun comment. Thanks!

    Rob,

I totally agree on the passion point. Life is meaningless without it.

    Maryamie,

As a fan of "Spinal Tap" my list "goes to 11"!

    11. Make every post something that the reader can use to:

    a. Make a lot of money.

    b. Get the opposite sex to want to dance with you.

    c. Make appear to be one of the most interesting people that have ever lived... and is also "root beer up your nose" funny.

NOTE: I avoid using number 11 because... frankly... it slows my blogging down to about 1 post per decade. YMMV (Your milage may vary). But it's still great advice for others. I'd certanly read a blog that met this criteria. Scott Adams of Dilbert comes really close... as does this chap named Robert Scoble... I hear he blogs in his sleep and it's still readable... or maybe he blogs while everyone else around him sleeps... or maybe everyone who reads him sleeps just after or during... Must Google that one.

Very true. Almost all commenters would someday return to see the activity around their comments. If the comment is lying unattended, they might get discouraged to leave comments in future.

    1) Title != Keywords. My blog "title" is a reflection of my irascibility and cynicism. it also keeps the readership down. But the Title doesn't have to have anything to do with your blog contents. Just write the title you like, and don't be afraid to change it.

    2) paying too much attention to attention getting headlines can turn you into Dvorak. Don't be Dvorak. Worrying about a "sexy" headline is putting the cart before the horse.

    3) Or annoys the hell out of people and makes them go away. Add in non-text things only when needed to get the point across better, and remember: Less is ALWAYS more. THere's a reason why Microsoft presentations just suck and Apple presentations don't. Look at the slides. That's not accidental. You want to really make your blog attractive? Widen it up. This idiocy of 4" wide text columns makes me want to scream. This isn't a newspaper. SPREAD OUT. I hate scrolling for pages just to read what is MAYBE two solid paragraphs of text. That was one of the prime factors behind the current design of my site. Wider text areas. Multimedia for multimedia's sake is wasting my time and yours, unless you think the trend of bad MIDI on sites is good.

    4) Post as often as you feel you should. If that's daily, great. if not, don't sweat it. RSS means you don't have to worry about people checking your site. Don't just post because it's a day that ends in a "y". That leads to bad blogs wherein "I like coffee" is the point. It's a communications medium. Sometimes, silence is good communications too.

    5) Niche, smiche. Write about the things that interest you. One of the best blogs *anywhere* is on LiveJournal. Yes, livejournal. http://tdj.livejournal.com/. He posts about bizarre little science things. It's not a deliberate niche, it's what interests him, but he's a good writer, and I'm totally addicted to his journal. It's not all science either. But it's his love for what he's posting that makes it interesting.

    6) Spot on

    7) NO. Being over the top for the sake of being controversial is being a Dvorak. We have one of him, and that's two too many. It's what gets Robert in trouble a lot too, his occasional need to piss people off just to get hits. I really wish he'd stop too. I'm over the top, but that's also who I am. I wear Zoot Suits and spats to weddings. I have neon shoelaces on my work shoes. The way I write is really quite reflective of me. I cuss a LOT. I'm good at it. But I don't just say shit to get eyeballs. That's lame.

    8) Tagging's nice, content's better. Tags won't make people read crap.

    9) SPOT on

    10) Create the environment you want. If you want nice, be nice, and insist on it. If you don't mind free-for-alls, then go for it, but don't complain when it becomes one. "Safe" is a meaningless term when you think about it.

    11) If only they did more.

Interestingly enough, just a few minutes ago I posted an entry on why I blog (http://lagesse.org/index.php/2006/09/19/what-i-get-out-of-blogging/) and I think you missed something important:

Talk about things you feel passionate about, even if nobody is reading them.  Don't invent things to discuss - discuss things that are important to you, and that you know about.
