12 July Our First day of work at PodTechI've been working since I was 15 years old and have been wearing many different hats in the last twenty years. Whether I worked at a place for two hours ( I was a waitress in a restaurant at Berkeley for two hours) or four years (I was a retreat coordinator for a Catholic retreat center for four years), I always remember my first day at work. If you pay close attention, you usually get a pretty good impression of how things will work out from the very first day. Our first day at PodTech, I like to report, was exciting, educational, and entertainning. It was exciting to meet our new coworkers; the workplace was brimming with new ideas, passionate energy and bright smiles. You know the kind of thrill when you start a new inspiring project and you just want to give it your hundred percent? I didn't see anyone with a bored, blasse look that you get from many employees at big corporations or the frustrated or nervous look of employees at small companies heading for decline. Everyone seemed eager to please and ready to do what it takes to make it work. I just loved absorbing the positive energy around me like rays of sunshine. I liked being in the midst of the chaotic energy of this new place as I watched Robert write down ideas for new shows on the board while talking to Irina, John, Paul and the rest of the team. I felt warm and cared for as Linda discussed the new emplyee package with me and Faizal set up my new computer. Did I mention I got a brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro? I sooooooooo love this machine. Nothing compares to it. How can an inanimate object stir such strong feelings in me? But I astray. Back to Podtech. I love them so much for buying me my new sleek silvery love. I was telling you about being around smart people and absorbing their positive energy. Within minutes of wallking in Irina was telling me about Upcoming.org: a great place to find out about all the upcoming events. This is an event and conference planner's dream come through. You don't ever have to fear about double booking your event with another conference and you'll always know about all the events happening around you. I felt I was learning so much just by being in the room with such smart and interesting people. Patrick, my step son, was hanging out with us during our first day too and it was fun and refreshing to watch our new world through his 12 years old eyes. When we drove up to the Sandhill parking lot of the Venture capital firm where PodTech is located, he took a look around and said, so this is the campus? We told him no. This is not Microsoft. No Campus, just an office. We started walking towards the buildings and Patrick looked at the one we were walking into and asked, so is this Podtech's building? We told him no. PodTech is an office inside of the building. We finally walked through the courtyard and we saw the little green sign of PodTech next to the office door. Patrick said, wow, that's it? Where are all the people riding scooters around? He asked disappointedly thinking of his past visits to the Xbox team. Robert and I couldn't help but laugh. Patrick got his chance to laugh at me as I struggled through the day working with the Mac as I am still so much in the PC state of mind. He provided snide remarks but helpful tactics throughout the day and we all enjoyed our lunch with Irina and Eddy of Geek Entertainment TV as Irina told us amusing stories about growing up as a Russian Immigrant in the Bronx. What a day! Can't wait to see what tomorrow has to bring. We are reporting in at 9 for a team meeting. Hello rush hour traffic; here we come! Update: Turns out Robert was writing his account of our first day of work, at the same time I was typing mine. We've been sitting quietly across from eachother typing our first impressions. Sometimes I wish we could discuss things with each other like normal couples do. I think if I were married to anybody else, we would have been talking a storm right now. All these feelings, impressions and thoughts need an outlet. It would be great to discuss it with someone who is going through the same things as you. Then again, if I were married to another man I probably wouldn't be working at Podtech. And I am pretty happy to be working for Podtech :) I almost forgot to add: Thanks for reading my blog. Sometimes this blog is the only outlet for my emotions, thoughts and ideas. You are so very patient with me dear readers. Hope you'll hang in there with me in this new exciting chapter in my life. So do you have any funny stories about your first day of work? I'd love to hear them :) Comments (10)
