I never asked for an iPhone, Part II

But now that I have it...oh man, I love it so. Let me give you my quick review of it from a non-geek, everyday user female perspective. It is the most.beautiful.cell phone.ever! I have never seen anything like it and I would never exchange it for any other cell. phone. It is not perfect, but it is lovely to hold. The user interface is divine while some of the functions can be improved on.

Here are three things I love about it:

    1) I love the fact that it works in my house, in my car (bluetooth), at work and just about anywhere I have been in the last few days.

    2) I love walking to my friends, taking their pictures, and having their picture pop up when they call me on my iPhone.

    3) I love the fact that it is synced with my entourage mail at work so I can check my mail on it.

Where it is not perfect for me:

    1) I am having trouble typing on the keypad. Maybe my fingers are too fat. I just keeping getting the letter next to the letter I meant to touch.

    2) The websites appear too small and when I touch it to zoom in, I accidentally have touched a url which sends me to another website. That can get tired too fast.

    3) I hate seeing the finger prints on the surface of the phone.

So here's my quick and easy review of the iPhone.

Is it worth $600? Will it change your life forever? Will it make you happy?

The answer to all of the above is NO.

But when my friend asked me if I preferred to have received a beautiful piece of jewelry instead of the iPhone from Robert, my answer was NO.

It's your money. You get to decide to iPhone or not to iPhone.

    no name,

Thanks for the tip. I will check it out when it becomes available.

    Aruni,

Sounds like you had some fun playing around with the iPhone. It has a lot of places where it could improve, but again for me the user experience, the way it makes me feel when I am using it, is surpassing any other cell. phone. Hope your husband can get the university to pay for the iPhones. That would be a sweet deal. I don't know about a digital recorder, but I do love my iPhone ;)

I forgot to mention that for our wedding anniversary, my husband got me a digital recorder.  At first I was skeptical but now I think it's the greatest.  I use it to interview people for the articles I co-write.  I think I got my husband something off of his Amazon wish list.  I would much rather have gotten that digital recorder over jewelry any day!

My husband and I finally went to the Apple store in town.  I think it might be the second one we have here in Austin.  He, of course, had already seen it and played with it and has been talking about it non-stop.  They are trying to see if the place he works will buy one for all of them (tough climb since they work for the university).

I was surprised at how small it actually was.  I, too, had a hard time typing on it...it kept saying I hit another key when I was pretty sure I hit the one I wanted.  It was a little easier in the landscape mode.  I guess since I'm used to Windows OS navigating around was not that easy.  I couldn't easily figure how to go back or close the screen and not have a web browser start up when I didn't want it to.

We noticed that our implementation of Ajax (which is compatible with IE, Safari, and Firefox) on our Baby Manager app doesn't work on the iPhone.  But we were able to log on and get to the app without problems.  I'm hoping Burningbird has some insights.

It is slated for Late august release 23-26th release. It will be triband unlocked from europe and america release is in 2008 although I have heard before that. It is not supposed to have wifi. But accordingly to mixed ce-bit reviews it will have wifi.

I'd like to see that when it comes out.

As I do love the Ipod. The Iphone really seems more of a PMP to me witha phone added in. But it is a good glance at the future of the Ipod to come. For the money I'll save it for the Samsung F700 which has been in development for awhile now. looks like the Ipod, touchscreen, 3G at 7.2 mbps. 5mp camera and slide out keyboard. A fix to all of iphones major problems. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you! I am sure version 2.0 will answer to many of these problems. Now, with all that effort to log into windows live it still shows you as no name :(

Excellent review, and well written!  iphone is a big deal, and while there are issues, it strikes me it will drive loyalty.  if Apple can incrementally improve the software, then the finger smudges and keyboard issues might wane.  Interesting in the comments about landscape keyboard bring better - hadn't read that anywhere, and maybe many don't even know about it.

PS ... don't make me log into win.live - I had to think back months for my userid.

That's amazing Ronin. I don't think I'll ever get that fast.

I was horrible with typing on the iPhone when I first got it. A week into, I'm much improved. Just did a test at http://www.iphonetypingtest.com and I'm averaging 33 WPM. I'm much faster in landscape mode too.

    Desi,

All good points. I guess what i was trying to get across is how good the user experience is. I can't say it any other way that it just looks beautiful and feels great.

I am not sure if the three items you liked about the iPhone are unique to it:

    1. There are a zillion phones with great reception, but it also depends upon where_you_are.

    2. Photo Caller ID was introduced in phones sometime in 2003 in the US, and a lot earlier in Japan.

    3. My 3 year old Nokia can sync with any POP3 inbox, not just Entourage or Gmail.

    That's quite a complement! Thanks Glenn :)

I would a say a fair analysis and one that is easier to read than that of Gizmodo...

    Thanks.

That's funny!  Too many people are calling it their precious. It's geek jewelry :)

A guy in my office just got an iPhone and is just monkey crazy about its features. He was watching a YouTube Monty Python short and was animatedly bobbing his head to one of those Monty Python jingles in the elevator. It certainly seemed to make him happy. It also seems to make people around him annoyed. :-)
